What this quote means is that you should surround yourself with good people or be alone than to be around bad people. It's good to be surrounded by people who have a good influence on you than to be with people who do a negative influence on you. Being alone is better to be with people who are bad company and a negative influence. Your reputation matters hanging out with people who are a positive influence is great. Bad company will just ruin your reputation. That's why it's better to be alone than ruining your reputation because it doesn't get ruined.
